Nehra is “more suited” to lead India’s T20I team, according to Harbhajan.

It has been considered to use distinct India squads for the various forms. For T20 Internationals, Harbhajan Singh believes that India should hire a fresh coach, similar to what England did with Matthew Mott during their recent run to the T20 World Cup championship. In his opinion, Ashish Nehra is the right candidate for the position.
“He knows this [T20 cricket] better than” Rahul Dravid, the all-format India coach, Harbhajan feels. In T20 format you can have someone like Ashish Nehra who recently retired from the game,” In Abu Dhabi, where he is a member of the Delhi Bulls lineup for the T10 league, Harbhajan spoke to PTI. “He [Nehra] knows this better than – with all due respect – Rahul.
“We [Dravid and he] have played together for so many years; he has vast knowledge, but this is a tricky format. Someone who has played the game more recently is better suited for the coaching job in T20s. I am not saying you remove Rahul from T20; Ashish and Rahul can work together to build this team for the 2024 World Cup.”
In T20s, Dravid’s final match as a representative was in October 2013, whilst Nehra’s was in November 2017. He later switched to coaching and oversaw the backroom operations for Gujarat Titans in the IPL earlier this year, when they won the competition in their inaugural campaign.
“With such an arrangement [split coaching], it is easy for Rahul as well, who can take a break as well like he did for New Zealand tour and Ashish can do the job in his absence,” Harbhajan said. VVS Laxman has replaced Dravid on India’s T20I tour of New Zealand.
“T20 strategy must change”
At the most recent Twenty20 World Cup, India’s openers Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul scored 116 and 128 runs, respectively, while scoring at strike rates of 106.42 and 120.75. However, India was eliminated from the tournament in the semi-finals after suffering a ten-wicket defeat at the hands of England. At the third spot in the lineup, Virat Kohli was much more impressive, topping the overall scoring chart for the competition with 296 runs at a strike rate of 136.40. But he, too, was unable to pick up the pace at some points, and there have been comments that India needs to give serious consideration to the top three positions in their batting order.
“The approach has to change in the T20 format,” Harbhajan said. The first six overs of the game are very crucial. In the event that this does not occur, you will have to rely on Hardik Pandya or Surya Suryakumar Yadav to score 50 runs off of 20 balls. If they do not go off, you will end up with a score that is worse than par.
“After adjusting their strategy, England was able to win two World Cups, the most recent of which was the ODI World Cup in 2019. T20 matches should be played in the same manner as T20 matches, not like ODIs.”
Harbhajan Singh made this statement in reference to the top three batsmen, specifically Rohit, Rahul, and Kohli. He stated, “All the top three need to do is enhance their strike rate.” It is challenging to try to make 180 when you are batting at 110 or 120 strikes per hour. In the first 10–12 overs, they need to average at least nine runs per over in the scoring column.
“I am no one to comment whether they would want to play [T20Is] or not. They are quality players. If they can remain fit, why not, provided the approach is different. Players can’t be changed overnight, the approach has to change.”
