New Zealand cricket released Martin Guptill from central contract
Guptill is New Zealand’s top scorer in Twenty20 internationals with more than 3,500 runs and is third in one-day internationals with 7,346 runs.
For the past 13 years, the 36-year-old Guptill has been a constant of New Zealand’s white ball teams. However, recently, he has lost the favour of the national selectors, and opener Finn Allen, 23 years old, has taken his place.
After recently losing his spot in both of New Zealand’s white-ball teams, Martin Guptill has become the newest player to be released from their central contract.
Guptill travelled to Australia to compete in the T20 World Cup, but he did not play since Finn Allen was picked to bat first. He also did not participate in the current series against India.
He has not declared his retirement from international cricket and has expressed a desire to play once more, but, like Trent Boult, he has been informed that those who are part of the contracted set-up would be given preference.
“Playing for my country has been a massive honour, and I’m grateful to everyone within the Blackcaps and NZC for their support,” Guptill said. “But, equally, I’m realistic enough to understand the need to consider my options in the current circumstances.
“With this release, I’m still available for New Zealand, I have the chance to explore other opportunities, and I also get to spend more time with my family – which is important.”
He might be considered for a BBL stint as a substitute player, as at least two clubs are looking to bolster their rosters in advance of the season.
“We understand Martin’s position,” NZC chief executive David White said . “He’s been a fantastic batsman for us for a long period of time, and we certainly don’t wish to stand in his way as he explores other opportunities.
“Martin’s been a giant of the white ball game, a committed and well-respected member of the Blackcaps, and has earned the right to play out his career on his own terms. He leaves his contract with our best wishes.”
If this does turn out to be the end of Guptill’s international career, he will have amassed 3531 runs in T20Is, which puts him comfortably atop the list, and 7346 runs at 41.73 in ODIs, which currently places him third on New Zealand’s all-time list with their highest individual score of 237 not out. In 2016, he completed his 47th and final Test match.
Following Boult’s decision to terminate his central contract earlier this year, Guptill made the same decision. Although he was also a member of the T20 World Cup team, he was not chosen to play India. Prior to go to the ILT20 with MI Emirates, he has a BBL contract with the Melbourne Stars coming up.
After being selected by Adelaide Strikers, Colin de Grandhomme also declared his retirement, while Jimmy Neesham turned down a contract when he was given it because of other agreements he had made before being taken off the list.
The changing landscape of T20 leagues would be a challenge for New Zealand, according to head coach Gary Stead after the T20 World Cup, but White is confident the sport can adapt.
“Players such as Martin, Trent and Colin, with long and successful international track-records, inevitably end up with alternative playing options at this stage of their careers, and we respect that,” he said. “It’s just part of the natural ebb and flow of individual careers within team sport.”

Shaheen Shah Afridi not only secured this feat in record time but also outshone the accomplishments of esteemed bowlers preceding him. He surpassed the record of the fastest pacer, previously held by Mitchell Starc, who attained the milestone in August 2016 during an ODI against Sri Lanka at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
