India lose at WACA ground against Australia in warmup session, T20 World CUP
KL Rahul batted patiently for 74 runs, but India struggled on a fast WACA surface against a powerful WA XI attack, falling by 36 runs ahead of the T20 World Cup.
Other than stand-in skipper Rahul Dravid, India’s batsmen were foiled in their pursuit after a close 13-run triumph in their first warm-up on Monday. With 17, Hardik Pandya was India’s second-highest scorer. Although they fielded throughout WA XI’s innings, regular skipper Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli did not bat.
Chasing 169, India’s openers Rahul and Rishabh Pant got off to a poor start against the pace attack of BBL champions Perth Scorchers. Pant battled with fluidity once more, swinging and missing on many attempted slogs against Jason Behrendorff’s pinpoint left-arm speed.
Pant made contact but miscued to the deep as India’s top order appeared uneasy on the bouncy pitch. After being held back, in-form speedster Lance Morris stepped into the attack in the seventh over and demonstrated why he may be Australia’s fastest bowler.
Morris, fresh off a Player-of-the-Match effort for Western Australia against New South Wales last week, bowled aggressively from the start, and it proved too much for Deepak Hooda, who holed out.
After a lengthy counterattack, Pandya was bowled by Hamish McKenzie’s left-arm spin, leaving India at 58 for 3, with Rahul particularly slow. India’s needed run rate soared out of control as Rahul’s teammates threw away their wickets.
Rahul was the exception, batting patiently until exploding for two sixes in the 18th over against Behrendorff to give India a chance at an unexpected win. His dismissal in the following over, though, essentially ended the game as India split their warm-up games in Perth.
After deciding to bat in bright circumstances, the WA XI dominated the game throughout. The presence of BBL star Josh Philippe bolstered their batting, but the opener holed out to Arshdeep Singh in the third over.
Similarly to the first game, quicks Arshdeep and Bhuvneshwar Kumar produced crisp bounce on a fast deck, but wickets were more difficult to come by after that.
R Ashwin, who did not play on Monday, entered the attack in the sixth over and was instantly blasted by D’Arcy Short, who teamed with Nick Hobson for a scorching 110-run combination.
Hobson, who plays for the Perth Scorchers and works as an accountant, was particularly aggressive against the spinners, hitting four sixes in his 41-ball innings.
But his removal precipitated a WA collapse, with Ashwin getting into a solid rhythm after a rough start, taking wickets in consecutive balls to remove skipper Ashton Turner and Sam Fanning, who excelled in game one with a half-century but tried to reverse sweep on his first delivery.
India were quick in the field, highlighted by two direct hits, and expertly marshalled by Rahul, despite the fact that skipper Rohit was still delivering instructions.
Kohli did not participate in either of the two warm-up matches in Perth, much to the chagrin of locals, although he did field and spend time at first slip and the deep. He also ran laps before the game.
A large audience of 2500 people gathered, with the AUD 5 admission price benefiting the WA Cricket Foundation.
